Sunshine and Shadow (aka Trip Around the World) is one of the three most popular quilt patterns of the Lancaster Amish. The other two are Diamond in a Square and Bars. This quilt is one of the finest examples of Sunshine and Shadow because of the combination of colors, fabrics, needlework and condition. Early examples of Sunshine and Shadow, such as this, are made of fine wool batiste. Later quilts used synthetic fabrics that are not as desirable. The quilt has the rich jewel tones sought in Amish quilts. The two well placed rows of coral color add focus to the pattern. The inner border is quilted with flowers on stems. The tradition scrolling feather fills the outer border. Condition is outstanding. Measurements are 82" square. Made circa 1920. The black strip seen in the last thumbnail photo is a sleeve from which the quilt can be hung. It can easily be removed if desired.
