Extensive searching did not reveal an example of this complex star pattern quilt. It is more like Feathered Stars than any other pattern I know but done with greater detail. The center is a 16 point star surrounded by 16 points of red and white triangles that come closest to Birds in the Air. The diamonds border contines this theme with variation. The quilt is very finely stitched with a feather border and detailed wreaths in the white blocks. The binding is unusual in that the back is a 3/4 inch red band turned over to create a narrow piping on the front. This was certainly made by a skilled and imaginative seamstress. The quilt was made circa 1870's and is in excellent condition. It has been professionally laundered. Measurements are 80 inches square.
