One Patch Diamond in Square Quilt with George Washington Center

This unique One Patch in Diamond quilt features George Washington with his steed appliqued in the center. It is from the Kready family of Manheim, Pennsylvania (Lancaster County). The quilt was in the collection of the Pennsylvania Quilt and Textile Museum in Lititz which closed about 2004. The quilt is made of a glorious collection of calico fabrics from the 1870's. The lights and darks are meticulously placed to create brown and light borders around both the center and outer diamonds. The squares are about 1 1/2 inches to a side. The outer border is a beautiful paisley print. The quilt is in immaculate, unwashed condition. It is as fresh as the day it was made some 150 years ago. Measurements are 88" x 90". No other example is known.
