Rarely does one find a Broderie Perse crib quilt. This early example is beautifully quilted with a variety of patterns including circles and outlines around the center leaf frame. It is interesting that the quilting is so fine while the applique is more crude in places. Around the outer border, for instance, the chintz flowers are sewn as outlines, without meticulously following the print. Upon close examination, one can see slight deterioration to some fabrics but they are evident only with a very careful look. Colors are well balanced with the indigo of the central star repeated in the Wild Goose Chase border. The quilt measures 58 inches square. Made circa 1830; found in Virginia.
