This is an elegant example of a Caesar's Crown quilt. It is extremely finely quilted with a feather border and floral motifs throughout. The teal blue/green and reddish/brown prints are "dressier" than many of the more traditional reds and greens. The sawtooth border in a lighter color sets it all off well.
Some might want this washed but it is not imperative. The small spots could certainly be removed with a bath and the already dense quilting would appear even more prominent. That said, to my eye, a wash is not essential.
The quilt measures 98" x 100", ample for a queen or king size bed. Maryland origin; circa 1850.
