These are two charming, Mennonite handmade chickens or hens. The black on the right is velvet with wear to the nap on one side. Facial features including the comb are embroidered red cotton. It measures 6 1/4 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches from breast to tail. There is a tiny slit to the velvet on the right side. Made about 1900.
The brown is wool with appliqued ribbon around the bottom, back and wings. The applique appears to be machine sewn. It has a fluffy wattle and comb. Measurements are 9 inches from beak to tail and 5 inches to the top of the head. There is some irregularity to the color but the fabrics are strong. Made circa 1880.
It is not clear whether these were toys or pot holders. Both are from Pennsylvania.
They are priced individually. The black one is $325 and $355 for the brown.
