Applique Crib Quilt

q1114

An extensive search for a name of this bold applique comes closest to  Lotus Flower; Coxcomb and Rose of Sharon although it is not a literal rendition of any of these flowers. It combines oakleaves and large thistle-like blooms. The sawtooth border is an interesting juxtaposition to the curvilinear interior pattern. Quilting is done with a pattern of diagonal lines. The  quilt has been professionally laundered. The colors have softened with age but the fabrics are strong and intact. Measurements are 33 1/2" x 38 1/2". A label sewn  to a back corner indicates that the quilt was in the collection of the Packwood House Museum in Pennsylvania. Made circa 1870.
