This Nine Block Sampler quilt is as bold as they come. Both the scale of the blocks and the use of solid colors make this a standout. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. Pencil marks are still in evidence. There are two very slight smudges on the outer border but nothing requiring attention. The border is quilted with a feather pattern with the unusual addition of fruit or flowers. The interior is quilted with diagonal lines. Measurements are 73 inches square. Made circa 1890.
This quilt is from the same family in New Oxford, Pennsylvania as the Oakleaf listed as item q1234 and the Princess Feather, q1235. Evidently the maker liked the Oakleaf pattern as it is repeated in this quilt. It was probably made by Joanna Jane Hoover who died in 1939.
