The name of this quilt pattern, Old Italian Block, is a mystery to me but it seems to be well established. This example is done with a glorious combination of stunning fabrics. All are in unwashed, pristine condition. The outer border is a highly glazed chintz. Oddly, the back is a cotton muslin. One would have expected a "dressier" choice given the front but perhaps the maker indulged all she could with the front of the quilt. It is quilted throughout with blocks of diamonds.
Measurements are 90" x 92": circa 1860.
