This quilt depicts the flags of the nations that participated in the 1876 Centennial International Exhibition. It was the first World's Fair in the United States and was held in Fairmount Park to memorialize the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. Thirty seven countries participated in the Exposition. This quilt shows 56 flags, some of which are repeated.
Nearly 10 million visitors attended the Fair. One of the very popular souvenirs was a printed bandanna depicting the flags of the participating countries. This appears to be a homemade version of that image. It is surely a one of a kind pattern.
The quilt is in pristine, unwashed condition. It measures 78" x 84". The backing is a Bars pattern in red and green calico.
