Rarely does one find a broderie perse (chintz applique) crib size quilt and certainly not with the graceful and full design of this fine example. It is richly colored with the appearance of considerable depth to the garlands of flowers. The chintz cut outs are the same fabric often used by venerated quiltmaker Achsah Goodwin Wilkins (1775-1854). The quilt is illustrated on page 176 of "America's Quilts and Coverlets" by Safford and Bishop and page 44 of Woodard and Greenstein's "Crib Quilts and Other Small Wonders".
It is professionally mounted on a stretcher measuring 39" x 43". Probably Pennsylvania origin; circa 1830.
