Elegant, finely handmade sterling silver bowl by William Spratling (1900-1967), known as the Father of Mexican Silver. Spratling was an American architect who moved to Mexico in 1931 to develop a silver making industry in Taxco. His designs combined both pre-Columbian and contemporary features. There are numerous books written by and about him and his work is in the collection of many museums.
This charger measures 11 1/2 inches wide and is 3 1/2 inches deep. The rim has three ornaments, each of which has two cabochon amethysts. Hallmarks date this piece to the period between 1940 and 1946. Condition is excellent.
