What a great, unique interpretation of a Carolina Lily quilt pattern. It is from the farm of Karl Merkel in Hamburg, Pennsylvania (Berks County). Placement of the baskets on two diagonals that meet in the center creates an additional, abstract geometric design throughout the middle of the quilt. The five borders are repeated in a Bars pattern throughout the back. The quilting, done entirely in white thread, stands out very well on the back making this quilt totally reversible. The quilt is in excellent, unwashed condition. Measurements are 72" x 74"; made circa 1890.
