Two features make this Baskets quilt especially lively. The body of each container is made of triangles. The diagonal grid echoes their direction, giving lots of movement to the composition. The use of half baskets makes an excellent border. The corner blocks look like an Hourglass pattern but in actuality, they are the same piecing used for the base of the Baskets. Taken out of context, they look quite different.
The quilt has two inked signatures on the back. One is illegible but the other says Emma L. Ruso. This is for Emma Louise Russo Jones (1862-1917). The quilt was evidently made before she married. Extensive family history is available. New York State origin; circa 1880.
Measurements are 72" x 94".
