Unusually fine example of one of the Lancaster County Amish quilt patterns for which they are best known. The Trip Around the World (aka Sunshine and Shadow) ; Diamond in a Square and Bars were the pattern choices most often favored by Amish women. This early quilt (made circa 1910) was done with the jewel tones most prized by collectors.
It is made of the very fine plainweave wool batiste used in early Lancaster Amish quilts. The back is cotton. Scrolling feathers were quilted in the outer border with wreaths in both the large and small corner blocks. Grapes and leaves fill the inner border. The initial R is embroidered on a back corner.
Condition is excellent. There is one small slightly lightened area on one outer border. Measurements are 74 inches square.
