This linen coverlet is decorated with the technique of blue resist. It is much like batik in that the fabric is first dipped in an indigo bath. The white design is created by painting the desired light area with wax before the bath. Multiple baths can create shadings of indigo.
This coverlet is made of three panels that are sewn together. Several different floral patterns all continue a theme of undulating vines. Measurements of the coverlet are 88 inches square. The floral designs are done on heavy linen. The coverlet was made circa 1800. It is a true rarity, particularly given the outstanding condition.
