This patriotic Shields quilt is unusual in both pattern and size. It measures 58 inches square.
The quilt is from Hometown, Pennsylvania (Schuylkill County) and was probably made at the time of World War I. It is in excellent, unwashed condition. There are a few light smudges in the border that can likely be removed with washing. The background is made of several different white cotton fabrics. The border is quilted with concentric chevrons that may have been intended as Victory V's.
The pattern and use of solid colors make a strong statement.
