Husswiffs (aka Housewives) were used to keep needles and scraps of fabric. They are also known as roll ups as they were rolled up for easier storage. This fine example has three pockets all in beautiful early 19th century printed fabrics. Pinned to the bottom pocket is a note saying " House-Wife (pronounced Husseff) owned by Mrs. Sidney Pardee)". Appliqued to the top on both front and back is a heart.

This roll-up is in outstanding condition. It measures 16 3/4" long and 5" wide. It was made in the 1820's; probably New England origin.
