Patriotic Quilt depicting the state flower of each of the 49 states. Although Alaska did not become a state until January 3, 1959, the quilt is a takeoff of a pattern published in 1933. Hubert VanMehren published Colonial Quilts and this example appeared in the Fort Worth Star Telegram in 1933. The original pattern shows the state flowers appliquéd rather than the embroidered version shown here. With that exception, the layouts are identical. In order to make the pattern come out even, Alaska was included even though it was a territory and not a state until more than 20 years later.
Stars in the sashing as well as the red, white and blue border indicate the maker's patriotic bent.
The quilt measures 82" x 94". It is in excellent condition.
