Tumbling Blocks (aka Baby Blocks) is one of the most three dimensional of quilt patterns. As is often the case, in addition to the cubes, one also sees 6 point stars. The use of solid colors in the middle makes the star especially prominent in this quilt.
The pattern is made with a tremendous selection of fabrics from the 1870's and 80's, most of which are prints.
The border and backing are "double blue" calico seen most often in southeastern Pennsylvania. The entire backing is made of this fabric. The quilt is in excellent condition. There is some oxidation around the edge of the solid cheddar block but no other condition issues. (This is not really an issue but in the name of full disclosure, I am mentioning it. For some unknown reason, this type of orange fabric often turns brown). The quilt measures 78" x 86". Pennsylvania origin; circa 1880.
