This sterling silver Butterfly brooch was one of Spratling's early, very popular designs. The streamlined form very effectively conveys the detailed body of the butterfly. The silver is adorned with two cabochon amethysts.
The brooch measures 2 1/2 inches at its widest and
2 1/8 inches in length. It weighs 40 grams and is in excellent condition. The hallmark dates to the 1940's.
William Spratling was well known as the leader of the mid 20th century design movement in Mexican silver. Many books have been written about him and his work is in the collection of several museums.
