Amish & Mennonite Quilts
The Amish quilters of Lancaster County have transformed several simple geometric patterns into brilliant works of art. Curiously, the Amish regarded piecing not as an admirable expression of thrift, but rather as "worldly" - a prohibitive criticism. Their quilts, therefore, were made of wide bands and fields of fabric that were purchased specifically for bedcovers. Few simpler patterns exist than those of the Bars and Diamond quilts. Yet they incorporate rich colors as sweeping backdrops to some of the most dazzling quilting ever seen.
