This original pattern Mennonite quilt most closely resembles the Philadelphia Pavement pattern. The use of entirely solid colors changes the look considerably. It's interesting that the pieces are rectangular rather than the usual squares. The contrast of the solid red and green fabrics makes for an eye dazzling design.
The quilt is in pristine, unwashed condition. It is from Lititz, Pennsylvania (Lancaster County); made circa 1880s. While the front is entirely solid colors, the back is a green calico. Measurements are 78" x 83". The body of the quilt is sewn with clamshell pattern quilting and a cable pattern for the border. All of the quilting is done with white thread.
